Chunklet

To address the issue, a vegetarian, Lisa Pollack, weighs in to include her input on clean meat. Since it was first implemented in Memphis Meats, it got her and her boyfriend thinking if they were willing to try it out. They casually ask each other the same question, and the author obviously says no because she does not usually consume meat, so she wouldn’t be able flip completely and start eating often. After all, she did choose to be vegetarian, and her tastes have adapted to her preferred diet. Likewise, she states, “Portobello mushrooms and some veggie sausages are already too meaty for me” (2).             After answering this question for herself, she wondered what others would think, hence wondering if others would agree with her. She begins to delve deeper, even pondering what “vegetarian” even means – “…many are already befuddled by the term “vegetarian” thanks to those who think dictionary definitions don’t apply to the...

2 Ledes

Lede 1 Meat is essentially everywhere, even in places you wouldn’t have thought of. Heck, when you peruse a restaurant’s menu, almost every item has some type of meat in it – chicken, beef, pork, you name it. When was the last time you saw a place that serves purely vegetarian food? If so, how successful and well-known would it be? The majority of restaurant chains are nonvegetarian, so they can attract more customers, instead of appealing only to a selective group. Likewise, how many of the people you know eat meat versus the people who don’t? Meat makes up a huge part of a diet and if most of us go without it, our main source of protein would be lost. It is an integral component of each meal we consume despite the expansive array of foods available. However, there is a downside to eating meat. For centuries, we’ve been slaughtering animals mercilessly for our selfish desires, making our lives a priority over theirs. What makes us more important than them? They should live a f...

https://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/acs.est.5b01614 This scholarly article goes into depth about clean meat. It discusses how it’s cultured, created, produced and eventually sold. The authors break down the process to an atomic level to demonstrate what truly occurs compared to the mass production of regular meat. This will aid me in the understanding of clean meat and much of an improvement it is from the consumption of regular meat. Furthermore, it will test the hypothesis – “This investigation seeks to evaluate the life cycle energy use, global warming potential (GWP), eutrophication potential (EP), and land use associated with in vitro biomass cultivation as an emerging food technology in the United States. It also compares the results to those of another speculative analysis of cultured biomass,3 as well as beef, pork, and poultry impacts from previously published studies” – and display the results through a matter of graphs and words as well to fully interpret the results. Seife does an exceptional job of convincing the reader that people need to more people for reassurance. In other words, for a belief to be held, more people are lured in so they can confirm their belief because as long as there’s someone who believes it, he/she can easily convince others because that is what other people are looking for – validation. He supports this claim through many examples, starting off with Dorothy Martin’s case, where she believed a theory where the US would be demolished and aliens will take the survivors to Mars through UFO’s.  He uses this and other examples to show that people want to be surrounded by others who have the same beliefs. He furthers this argument by explaining how the internet satisfies this need in the easiest way – a user simply uploads or posts their thoughts and it can earn them short-term fame. One aspect of this essay that I commend the author for is his ability to stay neutral. When he mentions politics, he mentions the left ...

Macedonian Fake News

The story was appealing in many ways that engaged the reader, including me. What was interesting about this article was that it provided such a detailed setting, which was in Veles, Macedonia. It sought insight into the character and what and how he grew up. Depicting what his surroundings really showed why he resorted to making money online because internet was his closest and quickest escape. Furthermore, the author includes pictures because to be fair, words weren’t completely enough. The gloominess and the emptiness of the area could only be seen with pictures and only be described so much although the words helped a lot. He states that the only theater closed down in the area, which built that the area was void of entertainment. Boris’ wants relate to the reader as well – he states that he just wants money to go to bars, electronics, and eventually a BMW which is his ultimate goal. He has a very ordinary, pretty much below average, life with desires that everyone has. No m...

iGod

In all honesty, I found this relatively interesting. I was able to follow along with the ideas the author had. The topic is very controversial nowadays which made it an interesting topic itself. However, this is geared towards an audience who are more familiar with computer science which is why it captivated me to an extent. I was able to understand the terminology, such as HTML and data buses because it’s relevant to my major. For those who are not in STEM or in a non-technological discipline I could understand why they would have difficulty because he barely elaborates on the terms he introduces. It was refreshing for me because if he did, I would get slightly annoyed because it would throw his track of thought off. On the other hand, it was too informational because the essay lacked a voice. He never adds his own ideas and only says something to transition to another source. This essay, I believe, included too many sources. There were definitely some that he could have cut out b...

3 Directions of Star Eater

The author, Finkel, makes this reading personable through using conversational techniques and rhetoric questions. In situations where he could just tell the reader the details about the black hole, he involves the reader and putting them in a hypothetical situation. For example, when he talks about an object passing through the black hole, not only does he say what happens, but he says if you were to pass through it, you wouldn’t know if a black hole is endless because you wouldn’t live for the whole time. This definitely intrigues the reader because the author is not only dumping information in an article, but including the reader in the appropriate situations.             This whole reading based on facts and the history of black holes, aka “star eaters.” He slowly goes through the history and the findings by several scientists, focusing on Albert Einstein sinc...
