To address the issue, a
vegetarian, Lisa Pollack, weighs in to include her input on clean meat. Since it
was first implemented in Memphis Meats, it got her and her boyfriend thinking
if they were willing to try it out. They casually ask each other the same question,
and the author obviously says no because she does not usually consume meat, so
she wouldn’t be able flip completely and start eating often. After all, she did
choose to be vegetarian, and her tastes have adapted to her preferred diet. Likewise,
she states, “Portobello mushrooms and some veggie sausages are already too
meaty for me” (2).
After
answering this question for herself, she wondered what others would think, hence
wondering if others would agree with her. She begins to delve deeper, even
pondering what “vegetarian” even means – “…many are already befuddled by the
term “vegetarian” thanks to those who think dictionary definitions don’t apply
to them. They eat fish, or even meat occasionally, and yet still claim to be ‘vegetarian’”
(3). From this, she implied that even there are people who have the same label as
her, but they still don’t eat the same food because of they have learned a
different definition of “vegetarian” (3).
Despite
how it will affect vegetarians, they will not be the targeted audience for
clean meat. Once it becomes available for the general public, omnivores will be
the primary aim. This is due to the fact vegetarians have been disinterested in
meat since the beginning, and taste of meat is appealing to them. On the other
hand, the concept of clean meat is intriguing to meat lovers because if they
are interested in losing weight and cutting down, clean meat is healthier
because it can made with less fat, whereas in regular meat the fat can be very unhealthy
for you. Plus, it is known that you eat too much meat, and clean meat and
provide a substitute so you can avoid the primary implications of consuming an
excessive amount of meat.
Pollack
concludes with the fact that despite the existential issue of everyone’s choice
of eating clean meat, it will definitely be a step in the right direction globally
“… given the health and environmental credentials” (8).
